“On Chicago’s Southside, war workers and soldiers on leave danced ‘til dawn at ‘rent’ parties that cost a quarter and provided beer, wings and catfish sandwiches. The music was live and might include local legends like Howlin’Wolf and Big Bill Broonzy or a new fellow just up from Mississippi called Muddy Waters. A generation later their music helped make a new American revolution but by that time a front row seat cost a week’s salary and there wasn’t a catfish sandwich in sight. Things were better in the Old Days.”
