Steven Chandler has been painting and drawing as long as he can remember. Growing up, he drew pictures of airplanes, war scenes, hunting and fishing scenes, oblivious to the classroom around him. After high school he went to live with his grandfather to help him do the work on his farm. Although he studied photography, he continued to draw and paint in his spare time. Even now his subjects are often taken from his memories of the rural south, working in his granddad's catfish farm, growing corn, feeding and tending cattle. One day when his dog and cat tracked red mud all over the house, he got the idea to use the mud to make paint. He says the color of red mud has always been his favorite, and it feels natural for him to paint with it. He likes to experiment with mixing different substances into his paint to change its texture, so much so that his wife at times feels the need to hide her baking ingredients.
