Only a few hours after meeting Teresa Thompson we found ourselves out in the dark looking into the trunk of her car. The situation was not as shady as it sounds. We were immediately charmed by the small assemblages she had brought with her. We have one to share with you here. Each one begins with a license plate, which is then transformed into a sort of nostalgic road-trip souvenir by Teresa’s hand. It turns out that Teresa Thompson’s hand is frequently clutching a torch. She might cut flocks of tiny birds or schools of tiny fish from steel to include in her small pieces, but a lot of her metalwork is large. She got started when she couldn’t find the right metal piece for her kitchen and decided to learn to make it herself. Now she cuts and welds elaborate gates, fences, doors, decorative screens, and indoor and outdoor sculptures. Teresa is a Floridian born & raised, and her work has a definite subtropical seaside feel. To see more of her work, visit www.hotmetalmama.com.
