Ernest Lee, known by everyone as "Chicken Man," can be found with a big grin on his face, painting and selling his signature "funky chickens" on Gervais Street in downtown Columbia, SC. Ernest is a talented artist who has been painting and drawing since he was a child, but he owes his fame to the wacky happy chickens he paints in all sorts of colors and costumes dancing around on their little stick legs. Chicken Man paints other subjects, but his funky chickens have become classic souvenirs of Columbia. He paints with acrylics on scrap wood that is often irregularly cut, warped, or broken. Ernest likes to park his colorful trailer that serves as art studio and store on a vacant lot within walking distance of the University of South Carolina (home of the “Gamecocks”). A while back some locals refused to let him set up shop on the street, but his fans rallied to his defense. It didn't take long for Chicken Man to find a street that welcomed him. His little trailer still gets in the way of urban development from time to time, but now Chicken Man himself has become a local tourist attraction. If you can’t find him on the street in Columbia, these days you can find him on Facebook.
